The winter months can really spell disaster for your home, especially if it hasn’t been prepared for it. The buildup of ice on your roof can be quite damaging since it can form ice dams along your home’s gutters. Homeowners dread this time of the year since it usually spells a lot of expenses in terms of home repair and maintenance.
Ice dams are usually caused when heavy snowfall begins to accumulate on your roof. This, along with poor attic ventilation, can cause the uneven distribution of warmth to melt the snow in an uneven manner. The melted snow then begins to run down your roof until it reaches a colder section like gutters and soffits until it starts to freeze again.
Once the ice starts forming on the edges of your roof, this can result in water potentially leaking into your home as it seeps through the ceiling, your walls, insulation and other areas. This can cause a lot of water damage since the trapped water can get into the internal structure of your home and cause things like frozen pipes or molds to happen.
Ice dam prevention begins by cleaning your roof gutters regularly. However, cleaning your roof is not always enough since external temperatures will eventually form enough frozen debris and cause melted water to freeze along your gutter once again.
A more long term solution can be done by giving your attic proper heating and ventilation. A good rule of thumb to follow is to get 1 square foot of ventilation for every 150 feet of your attic’s floor area. Of course, this still depends on your area's general climate, especially during the colder months. What’s important is that the outside temperature and that of your attic remain consistent to avoid the uneven melting and freezing of snow and ice.
