How Does Attic Insulation Lower Home Energy Cost?

Today, life is lived with energy. From heating your food in the microwave to turning on your television to watching your favorite television series; everything that is plugged in your home’s sockets functions with the help of electricity. Even though living with electricity has made life faster, easier, and more convenient, electricity has its flaws when you are consuming it too much.

Electricity is expensive; the more you use it, the more expensive your electric bill will be. People have found a few ways to compromise with that flaw; however, compromising is a difficult habit to obtain, especially when it comes to the seasons of winter and summer.

These two seasons go from having a normal temperature today, to extreme cold or heat in the very next. When that happens, you find yourself turning up your air conditioning unit or turning on your heaters, to stay comfortable during these extreme weathers; but that habit increases your electric consumption.

Fortunately, there is a method that you can install in your home that helps lower your consumption of electricity. That method is called attic insulation.

The materials for attic insulation can range from natural to synthetic; some of which can even be found in your home.

These materials include:

  • Fiberglass
  • Plastic Fibers
  • Cotton
  • Mineral Wool
  • Cellulose
  • Foam Spray
  • Rigid Foam
  • Soy-Based Spray
  • Wool
  • Straw

Whatever material you choose, insulation has one basic function; keeping your home’s temperature regulated and well-balanced. During summer, when the air is hot, heat flows through the walls of your home and spreads into the places that have none. During the winter, the heat inside your home passes through these same walls, allowing it to escape from your home, allowing cold air to come in. If insulation is installed, it reduces the rate air flow that comes in and out of your home significantly.

When insulation is met with hot air, the air is slowed down and trapped by the insulation’s tiny air pockets; allowing it to evenly spread throughout the whole house. As for the cold air during the winter, the heat that is inside your home is preserved by the same technique, thus, keeping your home warm during the winter.

With attic insulation, the temperature of your home will always be the way you want it. Therefore, your reliance on your air conditioning unit and heaters is lessened; reducing your electric consumption and electric costs.
